In Sid Fleischman's The
Whipping Boy Jemmy is an orphan who is taken from the streets to become the Prince's whipping boy. "Prince Brat", as
he is called by the townspeople, has to have someone to take his whippings for him because it is forbidden to whip royalty. Jemmy
despises the Prince. One night the Prince comes to Jemmy and tells him he is running away. Seeing this as an opportunity
for himself to escape and not wanting to be blamed for the incidence, Jemmy decides to leave along with the Prince. What
follows is a tale full of rogues, misfortune, adventure, and ultimately a lesson in friendship.
C'MON! READING IS GREAT!
Did you know?
It IS true that during some
part of history there were real whipping boys to take the punishments for misbehaving princes! Wow, that stinks!
